beforehand and insist upon the proper nurse who is supportive of natural labor. Do your research and recognize that many of the standard procedures, such as the early administration of Pitocin, as well as the very act of lying down for exams can strongly interfere with and in some cases stop labor.

Do not assume that, if labor is not progressing per what is expected precisely, that drugs or other medical intervention is necessary. Likely it is something that you are doing or not doing yourself, such as not standing, walking, or feeling relaxed. Instead, work with your doula and your husband if you wish to find positions and action to get you in the right state, both physically and mentally, letting her/them give you what you need to get in that state. Make sure that the people in the room are only those that you feel most comfortable around, that you know will support you at this time.
